To accommodate this requirement, OCC scientists developed a new generation of supercomputers. These combine two novel technologies: optronic circuitry and quantum computers. In OCC starships, to prevent that the ship relies solely on the central supercomputer, most systems have a local optronic processing center. These only contact the central supercomputer when massive processing power is required, such as when calculating the trajectory for a hyperspace jump.

> Optronic circuits

Conventional supercomputers rely on electronics to transfer signals between processing cores. This introduces a natural limit on the speed of the connections: electronic signals, being carried by electrons, will take at least a nanosecond to reach the next stage. Optronic circuits surpass this limit by letting the information be carried by photons, which can reach the next stage in picoseconds. Thus, this allows information to be transfered about 100 times faster. However, the conversion time needed to create the photons spoils some of the fun. Indeed, the net speed gain is reduced to about 20.

Although significant, there is another major benefit from using photons as information carriers. Whereas by transferring information using electrons limits us to send binary ‘on’ and ‘off’ signals in a morse-code-like fashion, for photons, we can control the wavelength and use that to encode information. Indeed, with sensitive phase discriminators, we are able to differentiate wavelenght differences up to 1 nm*. This opens up a whole new world for signal processing and information transfer. It also allows us to build optical circuits that can perform several hundred parallel calculations. For example, interference between two photons can be used to perform addition or multiplication calculations. The optics still need to be coupled to electronical circuit components. This hybrid between optical and electronical components is called an ‘optronic’ circuit.

The above properties led to the choice to let the systems of OCC starships run on optronic circuits.

*Note: it is clear that future generations can improve on this resolution. At this time, it is already quite easy to discriminate wavelength differences below 1 nm. However, because of interference between the photon beams and the size and complexity of the hardware needed to generate parallel photon beams at these wavelength differences, we settled for a 1 nm resolution.

> Quantum computers

Although the optronic circuits allow significant parallel processing, there is no beating the quantum computer at this game. Therefore, the supercomputers use quantum computers as processing centers, and use the optronic circuitry to convey and combine the results of calculations.

The downside of quantum computers is that the qubits must be completely isolated from their surroundings. Any unwanted interaction would collapse the quantum state, transforming the quantum computer effectively to a classical computer with a processing power that doesn’t even match up to a pocket calculator. Because of this, most systems in a starship only use optronic circuits. The quantum processing cores are mainly incorporated in the ship’s central supercomputer, the Primary CPU Core.

The next generation of supercomputers Running advanced technology like the teleporter or the hyperdrive requires a massive amount of processing power.
