Mass Destruction Cell (MDC)

The Mass Destruction Cell (MDC) is an electrical power source developed by the Omega Cyberspace Corporation. The device is the ultimate clean, renewable energy source.

In essence, the MDC is a miniature antimatter reactor. The recently discovered Delta radiation triggers the neutron in a deuterium nucleus to decay into a positron and an antiproton, which perform an annihilation reaction with the neighboring electrons and protons, respectively. The released energy is absorbed by a compact electromagnetic calorimeter, which converts the high-energy (~1 GeV for the proton-antiproton reaction) photons through a particle shower into photons with a wavelength that is suitable for photovoltaic cells, that generate the desired electrical energy. The process is depicted in the diagram to the right. This reaction yields an amazing amount of energy, about 1,000 times as much as released by nuclear reactions and 100,000 times as much as from traditional chemical reactions, making the MDC the most powerful power source in the history of humankind.

The reaction fuel is simple deuterium, which is abundantly available throughout the world. It is also not radioactive or, apart from being flammable, hazardous in any way. The only product of the reaction is energy, so it is what is termed a zero-emission device.

Since each reaction yields an enormous amount of energy, the MDC can last very long with its fuel, as well as output enough power to meet the demands of a large city. Typically, an MDC requires a refuel only once every 28 years. With modest dimensions of 31×18×18 cm3 and a weight of about 8 kg, the device is even portable and relatively easy to install.
